Three primary shooting events occur on a monthly or weekly basis: Civilian Marksmanship Match training, Air Rifle practice, and Action Pistol matches.  Safe firearms handling is the foremost focus at all of these events.  A brief description of each event follows below; you may contact volunteer coordinators on the Contacts page.

Action Pistol Safety Brief

 The match is run on a “COLD RANGE” which means:

ALL WEAPONS SHALL REMAIN HOLSTERED, UNLOADED AND UNCOCKED WITH THE MAGAZINE OUT, except when on the firing line.

Shooters shall observe the 180 DEGREE RULE” anytime a wepon is un-holstered, which means;

THE WEAPON SHALL BE POINTED DOWN RANGE AND THE MUZZLE SHALL NEVER CROSS A PERPENDICULAR LINE CREATED BY THE FIRING LINE.

Shooter must observe, “TRIGGER FINGER DISIPLINE” when reloading, changing magazines, clearing their pistol or traveling, which means;

THE TRIGGER FINGER MUST REMAIN OFF THE TRIGGER AND OUTSIDE OF THE TRIGGER GUARD

Observe The Rules of Gun Safety

RULE I: ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

RULE II: NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING   YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO DESTROY

RULE III: KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ALIGNED ON THE TARGET

RULE IV: BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET

Prior to each stage all shooters will gather at the firing line where the (RO) Range Officer will explain the course of fire and safety procedures for each stage.  Any questions about procedures or stage requirements will be answered at this time.

Action Pistol Procedures

When a shooter is called to the line the following dialogue will be conducted:

R.O. will ask the shooter, "Do you understand the course of fire?"

This is shooters last chance to ask any questions.

R.O. will inform the shooter "You may load and make ready."

At this point the shooter, WITH THEIR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER, may un-holster, load, make safe and then re-holster their pistol.

When the RO observes that the pistol is safely re-holstered the R.O.  will query, “Shooter ready?"

Once the shooter confirms that they are ready a random start timer will be activated. A buzzer will beep from 2 to 5 seconds later.  At this signal the shooter will draw their pistol WITH THEIR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER, and then engage the first target and then all remaining targets specified for the stage or course of fire.

If a misfire or safety violation occurs during the stage the RO will call a "Cease Fire" immediately.  Anyone seeing an unsafe condition shall call “Cease Fire”

Upon completion of the course of fire the R.O. will instruct the shooter to “Show Clear".  At this time the following actions will be taken:

Semi Automatic shooters will remove the magazine, eject any loaded round from the chamber, display the weapon to the RO with the chamber empty and magazine removed.  The shooter will then be instructed to "slide down, hammer down and holster."

Revolver shooters will open the cylinder. All cartridges spent or not, ejected and the empty cylinder displayed to the RO. The shooter will then be instructed to “close, hammer down and holster”

 Once the shooter has cleared the R.O. will announce, “Line is Safe”

Shooters may then go forward to score/paste targets, reset steel and pick up brass. Your help on the line with these tasks is greatly appreciated.
